Rachel and Darren’s Story

Rachel and Darren at Coltsford Mill Barn wedding Venue in Surrey

Darren proposed to Rachel just over a year before their wedding when they were walking their dog beside a river very early one morning. They were due to go on holiday a few days later so Rachel was completely surprised but says it was nice to be able to tell friends and family straight away, even if they did wake them all up!

Rachel and Darren found Coltsford Mill in Surrey after seeing it advertised in a wedding magazine. They booked an appointment to visit and knew as soon as they saw it that it was the place they wanted to get married. They booked the venue a year in advance.

Rachel wore an Ella dress that had a very long train with sequins at the hem and a tie back. It was designed to be strapless but Rachel added straps and also adjusted the back to make it open. Rachel did her own hair using sparkles and a hairband from Accessorize. She wore a delicate floating Swarovski necklace and her Mother in Law´s pearl earrings.

Rachel´s two best friends were her bridesmaids; Rachel has known Catherine all her life after their Mums met at antenatal class, and she has known Kate since she was nine. The Bridesmaids wore full length, halter neck purple dresses. Their four Ushers (all school friends of Darren) wore grey tailcoats with cream cravats.

Rachel and Darren decided not to have a particular theme and just wanted to make sure everyone had a good time, so Rachel left the flowers totally in the hands of her florist. Rachel said she did a wonderful job as the only instructions Rachel gave her were no calla lilies but to make sure there were cornflowers.

Rachel´s Dad is a designer, so they made the menus and place cards together. Their table centrepieces were large goldfish bowls with big purple flowers inside. For favours, Rachel bought a job lot of kids pocket toys, which she says kept everyone amused!

The wedding breakfast was a 3-course meal with leek and potato soup to start, followed by sausage and mash and fruit syllabub for dessert. Rachel is vegetarian so she had mozzarella and pepper filo tart for her main course instead of sausage and mash.

The wedding cake was a 3-tiered chocolate cake with chocolate swirls around the sides and an assortment of chocolates on each layer. Rachel and Darren had a cake topper made especially for them, which even included their dog who was there for their proposal.

Rachel said the best part of the day was walking out of the ceremony room married to Darren.

Her advice to other couples is not to spend too long having photos taken. Rachel and Darren were given this advice by friends and found it invaluable we had a few photos taken then chatted to our guests for a while, went away for more and then got back to our guests.

It did not feel like they were away for long at all and they still have wonderful photos!
